Patagonia (Patagonia National Park)

Officially created in 2018, this park is the result of what is reckoned the largest donation of private land for conservation in history: the American businessman and philanthropist Douglas Tompkins — founder of The North Face and Esprit — and his wife Kristine McDivitt Tompkins spent more than two decades buying up degraded former cattle estancias in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia in order to restore them ecologically and then hand them to both states as national parks. Douglas Tompkins died in 2015 in a kayaking accident on a Patagonian lake before seeing the gift completed; his widow formally finished it three years later, creating this park by merging the former Estancia Valle Chacabuco with two pre-existing national reserves.
