Declared in 1973, it protects the Rincón de la Vieja volcano, whose intense geothermal activity produces sulphurous fumaroles, boiling mud pools and hot springs rising straight out of the ground, all of it reachable by trails through tropical dry forest, one of the most threatened ecosystems in Central America because of agricultural clearance across Costa Rica's north Pacific region.
