Declared in 1952, it protects Pico Bolívar (4,978 m), the highest in Venezuela, and was for decades reachable by the Mérida cable car, which was at one point the highest and longest in the world before it closed for prolonged maintenance in the early 2010s. The park holds the few tropical glaciers still hanging on in Venezuela, in rapid retreat under climate change.
