Highlight
Argentina's southernmost national park; the end of the Pan-American route and of the southernmost railway in the world
Declared in 1960, it is the southernmost national park in Argentina, set beside Ushuaia, the town usually reckoned the end of the world. It marks the end of National Route 3, which runs the length of Argentina from north to south, and holds the southernmost railway on the planet, originally built in the early 20th century to carry the convicts of the Ushuaia penal colony who felled the timber of the surrounding forest, today turned into a tourist attraction known as the End of the World Train. The park faces a singular ecological plague: Canadian beavers introduced in the 1940s to build a fur industry that never prospered have multiplied with no natural predators, causing marked deforestation through the building of their dams.
