Highlight

The stone rivers (moreni) of the Vitosha massif

Vitosha Nature Park was declared in 1934 on the massif of the same name, immediately south of Sofia, and protects some 266 km². It was the first protected area in Bulgaria and in the whole Balkan peninsula, and one of the earliest designations of its kind in south-eastern Europe.

The massif is of volcanic and plutonic origin, with a rounded summit, Cherni Vrah, rising above 2,290 metres. Its most characteristic geomorphological feature is what are known as the stone rivers: extensive courses covered with rounded syenite boulders several metres across, which descend the slopes and beneath which water runs audibly but out of sight. They formed through the weathering of the rock during periglacial periods and the subsequent washing out of the fine material.

The vegetation combines beech and fir woods on the slopes, subalpine scrub of creeping juniper and high-altitude grassland on the summits, with peat bogs of great interest. The Bistrishko Branishte reserve, within the park, was one of the seventeen designations with which Bulgaria entered UNESCO's MaB programme in 1977. Its proximity to Sofia makes Vitosha the capital's recreation ground, with very high visitor numbers and considerable pressure on its trails and infrastructure.
