Volcán Barú

Declared in 1976, it protects the Barú volcano (3,474 m), the highest peak in Panama and the only point in the country from which, in clear conditions, both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea can be seen at the same time. The night ascent, begun in the small hours to reach the summit at dawn, has become a popular rite of passage among walkers visiting the nearby town of Boquete, the centre of Panama's high-altitude coffee growing thanks to the fertile volcanic soils of its slopes.
