Addo Elephant

Declared in 1931, Addo was created to protect the last 11 surviving elephants of the Eastern Cape region, after a government extermination campaign commissioned in 1919-1920 from the hunter Jan Pretorius to remove the elephants that were coming into conflict with local farming, and which killed more than 100 animals before public protest brought it to a halt. Today the population is over 600 elephants, one of the greatest recoveries of the species documented on the continent.
