Highlight
The Itaimbezinho canyon, with vertical walls 720 metres high, is nicknamed the Brazilian Grand Canyon
Declared in 1959, it protects the Itaimbezinho canyon, with vertical walls up to 720 metres high formed by successive basaltic lava flows some 130 million years ago, which has earned it the nickname of the Brazilian Grand Canyon. Its high-altitude subtropical climate, with winter frosts unusual in Brazil, supports a vegetation of araucarias distinct from that of the rest of the country.
