Highlight
A critical winter refuge for the Antarctic icefish, a family of fish with no haemoglobin in the blood, adapted to extreme cold
Designated an ASPA in 2004, Terra Nova Bay protects coastal waters that serve as a critical winter refuge for the Antarctic icefish, an evolutionarily unique family of fish that has lost haemoglobin from its blood entirely, an extreme adaptation to the freezing, oxygen-rich water of the Southern Ocean that has not been documented in any other vertebrate family on the planet.
