Highlight

The Watzmann massif and the Königssee

Declared in 1978, it protects the Watzmann massif and the Königssee, whose water is extraordinarily pure. The region carries an inescapable historical weight: the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), an alpine retreat built for Hitler in 1938, looks out over the park and is today a viewpoint run with a memorial and educational purpose. Long before that dark period, the area was already celebrated for its salt mines, worked since the Middle Ages and the source of much of Bavaria's historic wealth.
