Declared in 2011, after almost two decades managed as a forest reserve during and after Sierra Leone's brutal civil war (1991-2002), Gola Rainforest became a national park under a management model that actively brings in local communities as conservation partners, sharing revenue from ecotourism and from the carbon credit market as a direct economic alternative to logging this remnant of the Upper Guinean forest.
