Declared in 1979, Campos del Tuyú is the only place in the province of Buenos Aires that still holds a population of pampas deer, a subspecies listed as critically endangered whose historic population across the Argentine pampas has fallen by more than 99% since the 19th century through hunting and the near-total conversion of the original grassland ecosystem to agriculture.
