Protected since 1969, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world by volume after the Grand Canyon, running up to 27 km wide and 550 metres deep in places. Its 85 km traverse along the canyon floor, which takes four to five days on foot with no facilities and no prospect of quick rescue, is among the most demanding treks in Africa.
