Conguillio

Declared in 1950, it protects extensive forests of araucaria (Araucaria araucana), a tree of an evolutionary lineage going back to the Jurassic period, which has survived practically unchanged for more than 150 million years. It is held sacred by the Mapuche Pehuenche people — people of the araucaria — whose traditional diet depended largely on the tree's edible pine nut, and which has been protected from commercial logging throughout Chile since being declared a Natural Monument in 1976.
