Samaria Gorge

Declared in 1962, the Samaria Gorge in Crete is one of the longest river gorges in Europe, with a walking route of some 16 km culminating at the Iron Gates, a narrows where the rock walls close to barely 3 metres apart and rise more than 300 metres on either side. It is a refuge of the kri-kri, a wild goat endemic to Crete whose ancestors may have been introduced as early as the Minoan Bronze Age.
