Indio Maiz

Declared in 1990, Indio Maíz is one of the best-preserved biological reserves in Nicaragua, set beside the historic San Juan River, a waterway that through the 18th and 19th centuries was reckoned the most feasible interoceanic transit route between the Atlantic and the Pacific before the Panama Canal was built, and which came close to becoming an alternative Nicaraguan canal several times over the course of history.
