Kahurangi

Declared in 1996, it is the second most extensive national park in New Zealand and holds more than 80% of all the country's native plant species within a single territory, thanks to a combination of geologically very diverse soils, from granite to karst limestone. It is also habitat of the giant weta, one of the heaviest insects in the world, which can outweigh a sparrow, an extreme case of island gigantism produced by the historic absence of native predatory mammals in New Zealand.
