Declared in 1972, it protects Mount Logan (5,959 m), the highest mountain in Canada and the second in North America after Denali, along with the largest non-polar icefield on the planet. Together with the adjoining parks of Wrangell-St Elias and Glacier Bay in Alaska and Tatshenshini-Alsek in British Columbia, it forms the largest contiguous transboundary protected area in the world, jointly inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
