Wicklow Mountains

Declared in 1991, the Wicklow Mountains hold Glendalough, a monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin in a remote glacial valley, which became through the Middle Ages one of the most important centres of pilgrimage and learning in Ireland, with a round tower more than 30 metres high that remains one of the best-preserved examples of this kind of Irish monastic architecture.
