Perito Moreno (Santa Cruz)

Declared in 1937 — the same year as Los Glaciares, with which it is often confused because both are named after the same explorer, Francisco Moreno — this park protects a remote Patagonian landscape of high steppe and lakes, with rock paintings more than 8,000 years old in caves such as Casa de Piedra, attributed to the ancestral hunter-gatherers of southern Patagonia. It is one of the last significant refuges of the huemul, an endangered Andean deer that appears on the Argentine national coat of arms.
