One of the last semi-managed free-ranging plains bison herds in central Canada
Declared in 1933 over a former forest reserve, Riding Mountain has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1986 and holds a plains bison herd kept in a large semi-managed enclosure since the 1930s, after the species was all but wiped out across North America in the late 19th century. The Mennonite and Ukrainian communities settled around it in the early 20th century add a distinctive cultural layer to the region.
