Highlight

A coastal hill with hornbeam forest and dry grassland

Stenshuvud National Park was established in 1986 on the eastern coast of Scania, in south-eastern Sweden, and at some 4 km² it is one of the smallest national parks in the country. Its core is a hill rising directly above the Baltic, an outcrop of ancient rock that dominates the surrounding plain.

Despite its minimal size, it concentrates a notable variety of environments: hornbeam and broadleaf woodland on the slopes, dry meadows and heaths in the open areas, marshes, sandy beaches and rocky shore. That diversity, together with the relatively mild climate of south-eastern Sweden, produces a botanical richness very high for the latitude, with orchids and thermophilous plants that in Sweden have one of their few footholds here.

The wildlife matches that singularity: the garden dormouse and the green toad reach the northern limit of their range in this area, and the coastal position makes the park a watchpoint for migratory birds. The hill also has an archaeological past: on its top survive the remains of an Iron Age fortification, and the name refers to the silhouette the headland draws, visible from far off to Baltic sailors.
