Sarek

Declared in 1909 in Sweden's first wave of national parks — among the earliest in the whole of Europe — Sarek spreads across Swedish Lapland with not a single waymarked trail, no mountain huts and no mobile coverage, which has earned it the name of the last wilderness in Europe. Its relief was carved by more than a hundred active glaciers and six peaks above 2,000 metres, among deep valleys such as Rapadalen. Together with Padjelanta, Muddus and Stora Sjöfallet it forms the Laponian Area World Heritage Site, the ancestral land of the Sami, who still herd reindeer around it. Suitable only for experienced walkers, its few visitors describe it as a place where you can walk for days without meeting a soul.
