Declared in 1895, it was joined in 1932 with Glacier National Park in the United States to create the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the first international peace park in the world — a symbolic gesture of friendship between the two nations after the First World War, driven by Rotary clubs on both sides of the border. It is a unique geological meeting point where the plains run straight up against the Rockies with no foothills in between, a phenomenon known as where the mountains meet the prairie.
