Way Kambas

Declared in 1989, it has housed since 1985 the first Elephant Training Centre in Indonesia, where rescued or captive-born Sumatran elephants are trained not for shows but for real conservation work: patrolling the forest alongside human rangers, safely driving problem wild elephants away from neighbouring crops, and taking part in anti-poaching tracking. The park is also one of the last confirmed habitats of the Sumatran rhinoceros, the smallest and most threatened rhinoceros species in the world, with a total wild population estimated at fewer than 50 animals anywhere on the planet.
