Declared in 1934 — one of the first national parks in Japan — Daisetsuzan is the largest national park in the country. Its name comes from the Ainu term Kamuy Mintar, meaning "garden of the gods" or "dwelling place of the gods", reflecting the deep spiritual reverence of the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido for this mountain massif, held sacred long before the Japanese colonisation of the island in the 19th century.
