Australia's longest fringing reef, some 260 km, and one of the few great reefs in the world that literally hugs the land. The continental shelf is unusually narrow here, so that deep ocean water, the reef and the coast lie very close together: that concentrates an amount of marine life out of all proportion to the size of the place.
