Alerce Andino

Declared in 1982, it protects forests of Patagonian alerce with trees up to 3,000 years old, barely 40 km from the city of Puerto Montt, which makes it one of the most accessible thousand-year-old alerce forests in Chile. It is also home to the monito del monte, a small marsupial that despite its name — little mountain monkey — is not a primate at all, but the only survivor of an ancient lineage of South American marsupials going back more than 40 million years.
