Børgefjell

Børgefjell National Park was established in 1963, among the first in Norway, and protects some 1,450 km² on the boundary between Trøndelag and Nordland counties, next to the Swedish border. It was later extended beyond its original size.

It is one of the most remote and least frequented areas in the country. There are no roads, no marked trails and no huts within its boundaries: the park is travelled with independent navigation, and that deliberate absence of infrastructure forms part of its management model. The landscape is one of middle mountain with rounded summits, broad valleys, a dense network of clear-water lakes and rivers and extensive alpine heaths.

Børgefjell is known above all for its Arctic fox. This population is one of the few that survived in Scandinavia when the species came close to extinction on the peninsula, and it has been the object of support programmes with supplementary feeding and control of the red fox, which competes with it and is advancing northwards with warming. The park is also home to wolverine, elk and a notable wetland and mountain birdlife, with divers and raptors. The territory forms part of the reindeer grazing area of southern Sami communities, whose activity continues within the park.
