Braulio Carrillo

Declared in 1978, Braulio Carrillo is crossed by the main motorway between San José and the Caribbean coast, built in the 1980s to a deliberately minimal design to reduce its impact on the rainforest, with none of the usual service areas or advertising. The park links an almost continuous altitudinal gradient from the 2,900 metres of the Barva volcano down to barely 50 metres above sea level, one of the largest protected drops in Costa Rica.
