Mountain Zebra

Declared in 1937, Mountain Zebra was created specifically to save the Cape mountain zebra, whose numbers had fallen to barely five surviving animals by the 1930s through hunting and competition with livestock. Thanks to decades of strict protection and breeding programmes, the species has recovered to several thousand spread across various South African reserves, in one of the most cited recoveries of a subspecies from a minimal population in the history of conservation.
