Denali

Declared in 1917 as Mount McKinley National Park, in honour of the American president William McKinley — a name that caused a century of controversy for ignoring the traditional indigenous one — it officially recovered its native Athabascan name, Denali (the high one), in 2015. It protects the highest mountain in North America, at 6,190 metres above sea level, and the greatest topographic rise of any mountain on land, since it climbs from a base at only 600 m. Private motor access is restricted to the first 24 km of its single road; the rest is travelled only on park buses, a policy designed to keep the impact on free-ranging wildlife to a minimum, grizzly bears, wolves and caribou among them.
