Highlight

Restored after the ecological collapse caused by the Diama dam in the 1980s, by artificially reintroducing seasonal flooding

Declared in 1991, Diawling was created as a direct response to the ecological collapse of the Senegal river delta after the Diama dam was built in the late 1980s, which removed the natural regime of seasonal flooding on which the whole ecosystem depended. Since its declaration the park has put in a system of sluice gates to simulate those lost floods artificially, a pioneering case of active hydrological restoration in an African protected area.
