Declared in 1978 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012 as part of the Western Ghats, Eravikulam protects more than a third of the world population of the Nilgiri tahr, a wild goat endemic to these mountains that was brought to the brink of extinction by hunting under British colonial rule and has since recovered to become one of the most easily watched animals in the park, its animals used to people along the trails open to the public.
