Highlight
A 98 km peninsula of sand dunes built up over 5,000 years, which has buried whole villages beneath the moving sand
Declared in 1991 on the Lithuanian side and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 as a cultural property shared with Russia, the Curonian Spit is a narrow strip of sand dunes 98 km long, built up over some 5,000 years by Baltic currents. Its dunes, among the highest in Europe, advanced so aggressively through the 18th and 19th centuries that they buried several entire fishing villages under the sand, forcing their inhabitants to resettle again and again.
