Declared in 1980, Gates of the Arctic is the second largest national park in the United States and consistently the least visited of them all, with barely a few thousand visitors a year against the millions at other flagship parks, because it has no roads, no marked trails and no tourist facilities whatever: it can only be reached by light aircraft, and only by those able to navigate Arctic wilderness entirely self-sufficiently.
