The largest high-mountain plateau in Europe
At 3,422 km² it is the largest national park in mainland Norway (declared in 1981) and protects the largest high-mountain plateau in Europe, known as the roof of Norway. Its gentle western slope, wetter and more broken, contrasts with the drier east. It holds the largest herd of wild and semi-domesticated reindeer in Europe, the legacy of a relationship between people and reindeer going back thousands of years in the region. The Bergen Railway, one of the highest lines in Europe, skirts the park and gives unusually easy access to such remote high country.
