Highlight
The second largest freshwater wetland in South America; a pioneering rewilding project with jaguar and giant anteater reintroduced
Declared a provincial reserve in 1983, with a further national park created in 2018 on land donated by the American philanthropist Douglas Tompkins and his foundation, Iberá protects the second largest freshwater wetland in South America after the Pantanal. It is now Argentina's most ambitious rewilding project: since the 2010s the giant anteater and the peccary have been successfully reintroduced and, most symbolically of all, the jaguar, extinct in the region for decades through hunting and habitat loss, in a programme that breeds animals in semi-captivity before releasing them gradually into the reserve.
