Jasmund

Declared in 1990, barely weeks after German reunification, Jasmund is the smallest national park in Germany and protects the white chalk cliffs of the island of Rügen, whose contrast with the Baltic directly inspired the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich for his celebrated Chalk Cliffs on Rügen (1818), one of the defining works of German Romanticism. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 as part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.
