Declared a forest reserve in 1907 and raised to a national park soon afterwards, it is the largest of the Canadian Rocky Mountain parks. The Icefields Parkway, which links it with Banff, is frequently named among the most spectacular scenic roads in the world, running alongside the Columbia Icefield, the largest non-polar icefield in North America. Unlike Banff, far more commercial, Jasper keeps a quieter, wilder character, with one of the last viable populations of woodland caribou in Canada, now in serious decline as its habitat is broken up.
