Declared in 1980, Kobuk Valley protects the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, a field of active dunes of glacial origin lying above the Arctic Circle, an extremely unusual geographical phenomenon combining an almost desert-like landscape with an extreme subarctic climate. The park has no roads and no marked trails, and is crossed each year by the Western Arctic caribou herd, one of the largest in North America.
