Declared in 1937 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017, Los Alerces protects forests of Patagonian cypress (Fitzroya cupressoides), an extraordinarily slow-growing tree that can pass 3,000 years of age, putting it among the longest-lived organisms on the planet alongside the Californian redwoods and the bristlecone pines. Historic felling of the tree for its valuable timber is what led to its full legal protection within the park.
