Declared in 2005 and managed jointly with the local Inuit communities under a co-management agreement, the Torngat Mountains take their name from Torngak, a powerful spirit of Inuit mythology traditionally associated with this remote range, held to be a place of great spiritual weight. With no tourist infrastructure and no roads of any kind, it can only be reached by light aircraft or boat, and visitors must be accompanied by armed Inuit guides because of the high density of polar bears in the region.
