Udzungwa Mountains

Declared in 1992, the Udzungwa Mountains form part of Africa's Eastern Arc and are nicknamed the African Galápagos for their extremely high degree of endemism, the result of millions of years of evolutionary isolation. It was here that the kipunji monkey was discovered, described by science in 2005 — the first new genus of African monkey identified in more than 80 years — as well as the Udzungwa highland mangabey, found in 2003, two examples of how these mountains go on revealing primate species unknown to science well into the 21st century.
