Nevado de Colima

Declared in 1936, it protects two twin volcanoes of very different origin and age: the Nevado de Colima, extinct and occasionally snow-covered in winter, and the neighbouring Volcán de Fuego de Colima, one of the most active volcanoes in North America, with frequent eruptions documented since pre-Hispanic times and near-permanent scientific monitoring because of how close it is to inhabited areas. The climb to the summit of the Nevado, popular with Mexican mountaineers, gives direct views into the smoking crater of its active neighbour.
