Arctic fells, 350 km of trails, Sami culture
Formed in 2005 by merging the former parks of Pallas-Ounastunturi and Yllästunturi, it is the most visited national park in Finnish Lapland. Its fells — rounded mountains worn down by successive glaciations, among the oldest geological formations in Europe — dominate a landscape of boreal forest and peat bog where Sami reindeer herders share the ground with walkers: it has 350 km of summer routes and more than 500 km of cross-country ski tracks. It is also one of the finest places in Europe to watch the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer.
