Highlight
The eroded remains of an ancient volcanic field that has travelled more than 300 km along the San Andreas Fault in 23 million years
Declared the most recent national park in mainland California in 2013, Pinnacles preserves the eroded remains of an ancient volcanic field which, carried along by the movement of the San Andreas Fault over 23 million years, has travelled more than 300 km from its original point of origin in the south of the state, a textbook example of tectonic displacement along a transform fault. It is one of the principal strongholds for the reintroduction of the California condor.
