Highlight

Norway's first national park, declared in 1962; its rounded mountains gave rise to the word rondane in old Norse mythology

Declared in 1962, it was the first national park in Norway, protecting a landscape of mountains rounded by successive glaciations that supports one of the last significant populations of wild mountain reindeer in Europe, a species genetically distinct from the semi-domesticated reindeer herded by the Sami in the north of the country, and whose unbroken presence in Rondane goes back tens of thousands of years, documented in prehistoric hunting traps still visible in the landscape.
