Highlight

It protects the largest saguaro cactus forest in the world, a cactus that can live over 150 years and grows its first arm only at 75

Declared in 1994 over an earlier national monument, Saguaro protects the largest saguaro cactus forest in the world, an extraordinarily slow-growing species that can live more than 150 years and typically does not put out its first side arm until it is 75, so the many-armed specimens that dominate the park's landscape are in fact more than a century old. The cactus is a sacred symbol to the Tohono O'odham people, whose ancestral land surrounds the park.
