Declared in 1939, it is the oldest national park in Bolivia and protects Nevado Sajama (6,542 m), the highest mountain in the country, along with the highest queñua forest in the world (Polylepis tarapacana), a tree able to grow in extreme conditions above 5,000 metres thanks to its insulating bark of many papery layers, an adaptation unique among the trees of the planet.
